Welcome to Uist Craft Producers!
We are a group of around 40 artists and craft producers based in the Uists and Benbecula. Originally formed in the 1980s and managed by and for it’s members. A wide range of high quality, local, hand-crafted items and art are available in our shop at the Kildonan Centre, South Uist.
This unique shop provides a fascinating showcase for visitors interested in original handmade regional items and art created by our talented artists and craftspeople.
Come and visit us at Kildonan Centre! As well as the Uist Craft Producers shop, there is also a Museum and Cafe at the centre.
Like all remote places of the world, the Uists have a long tradition of self-sufficiency; this has meant that highly skilled crafts were a necessity for daily existence. Craft skills were also employed for fun and entertainment.
Crafts born of necessity are now valued in their own right. To have grown and evolved from such strong roots gives authenticity and vigour to present day products. Alongside these traditionally based crafts sit the more contemporary ones, the inspiration for which, for the most part, is drawn from the landscape, culture and wildlife of the Uists.
We take our crafts very seriously, some are created with humour and imagination, others are made because the desire to create is overwhelming, but all are made with great personal effort and thought.
The range of products for sale in the shop generally include: books (including hand-made), candles, cards, ceramics, clothing, cosmetics, folk art, glass, gloves, hats, jewelry, kilt hose, knitwear, music, paintings, photography, poetry, pottery, pressed flowers, rugs, sculpture, sewn textiles, shell craft, shepherd’s crooks, socks, soap, spinning, tablet, weaving.
